영어의 리듬은 강세와 강세의 사이가 거의 일정하게 발음되는 강세 박자 리듬인데 반하여, 우리말은 음절과 음절의 사이가 일정하게 발음되는 음절 박자 리듬을 가졌다. 다음의 예에서 우리는 이 리듬의 차이가 어떤 것인가를 분명하게 알 수 있다.
